$5 Thrift Store Treasure: From Drab to Moroccan Fab!

Melissa Geskie

You know that feeling when you stumble upon a hidden gem at a thrift store? That's exactly what happened when I found this little table. It was sturdy, in great condition, and only $5! Seriously, five bucks! But, let's be honest, the original color was... well, let's just say it lacked personality. It screamed for a makeover, and I was ready to answer the call.

My first thought was to swap out the hardware, but then I noticed the unique pulls on the base. They had this intricate, almost Moroccan vibe, and that sparked my creativity. I envisioned a fusion of earthy tones and vibrant patterns.

Operation: Transformation Begins!

First things first, prep work! I grabbed my trusty White Lightning cleaner from Dixie Belle. If you're not familiar, this stuff is magic. It cuts through grime and preps your surface for paint like a champ. (For detailed instructions on using White Lightning, check out the Dixie Belle website).

Next up, Bonding Boss! This is my secret weapon for ensuring paint adheres perfectly to slick surfaces. I applied a thin, even coat, following the instructions on the Dixie Belle site. (You can find the instructions here: Dixie Belle Bonding Boss). This step is crucial for a lasting finish.

Color Me Olive Wood!

Now for the fun part: color! I chose Olive Wood from the Southern Roots collection by Dixie Belle. It's a gorgeous, soft green that's both calming and stylish. It perfectly complemented the Moroccan inspiration. I painted on two even coats of this color.

But the real magic happened when I added the paper! I found this stunning Moorish Tiles paper, and it was love at first sight. I carefully cut the paper into individual tiles and applied them to the front of the table using Dixie Belle's Clear Coat. This clear coat not only adhered the paper beautifully but also provided a protective layer.

Finishing Touches: Wax and Gilding!

To seal and protect the entire piece, I used Dixie Belle's Clear Wax. It gave the table a smooth, durable finish. And for a touch of antique elegance, I accented the hinges with Antique Gold Gilding Wax. It added just the right amount of shimmer and detail.

Product List:

And there you have it! A $5 thrift store table transformed into a stunning piece of furniture with a unique Moroccan flair. It just goes to show that with a little creativity and some amazing Dixie Belle products, you can turn any drab piece into something truly fabulous.

Don't be afraid to experiment with color and patterns. You never know what treasures you might create!
