From Auction Flop to Faux Wood Fabulous: My $14 Table Transformation!

Melissa Geskie

You know that thrill of snagging a deal? I recently experienced it firsthand, winning a set of tables at an online auction for a mere $14! Wow, what a score, right? But, as is often the case with incredible bargains, there was a catch. When I picked them up, I discovered a major hiccup: the tabletops were made of chipping particle board. My initial plan to stain them went out the window! But don't worry, fellow DIY enthusiasts, I've got the solution!

This project became a masterclass in creative problem-solving and faux wood techniques, using the magic of Dixie Belle Paint Co. products. Let me walk you through my transformation journey.

Addressing the Chipping Particle Board:

First things first, I tackled the damaged tabletops. I carefully removed all the loose particles, creating a smoother surface. Then, I reached for my trusty Dixie Belle Mud to fill in the holes and imperfections. This amazing product is perfect for repairing damaged surfaces, and it dries rock solid. Once the mud was completely dry, I sanded the tops back with my SurfPrep Sanding System to a smooth, flat finish.

Creating a Smooth Canvas:

To prep for the faux wood finish, I applied Dixie Belle Mud Puddle over the entire tabletop surface. This created a smooth, even base for the next step.

The Magic of VooDoo Gel Stain and Faux Wood Graining:

Now for the fun part! I mixed Dixie Belle VooDoo Gel Stain in Tobacco Road and Black Magic, adding a touch of water to thin it slightly. This created a rich, deep base color. Then, I used the wood graining tool to create a stunning faux wood effect. This tool is truly magical, allowing you to achieve realistic wood grain patterns with ease.

Adding Warmth and Depth:

After the VooDoo Gel Stain had dried, I applied Dixie Belle Gel Stain in Golden Ash to add warmth and depth to the faux wood finish. I applied this using an applicator pad, wiping it on and blending it for a subtle, aged look. To seal the top I added Gator Hide for a solid finish.

Protecting and Painting the Base:

To prevent any staining on the table bases, I applied Dixie Belle Bonding Boss in Clear. This acts as a protective barrier, ensuring a flawless finish. Finally, I applied two even coats of Dixie Belle Acadia Silk Paint in a rich, vibrant green. This gorgeous color complemented the faux wood tops perfectly.

So, there you have it! My $14 auction find, transformed from a chipped particle board disaster to a stunning faux wood masterpiece. And guess what? You can do it too! With a little creativity, some patience, and the incredible versatility of Dixie Belle Paint products, any furniture flaw can be turned into a unique and beautiful feature. Don't be afraid to experiment, embrace the process, and let your inner artist shine. Grab your brushes, your Dixie Belle Mud, and your favorite gel stains, and start creating magic! You'll be amazed at what you can achieve.
