Thrifting is my jam! I love the thrill of the hunt and finding hidden treasures at bargain prices. One item I often stumble upon? Laminate-style jewelry boxes. They're usually inexpensive and perfect for experimenting with bold colors – something I don't always dare to do on larger furniture pieces. If you're looking for a fun and easy DIY project, transforming a thrift store jewelry box is a fantastic way to unleash your creativity and add a unique touch to your space. This post will guide you through the process, including prepping the surface with Dixie Belle Bonding Boss, painting with Dixie Belle's Silk All-In-One Paint, and adding a stunning transfer for a truly one-of-a-kind look.

Before, brown and shiny!
Before, brown and shiny!

Why a Thrift Store Jewelry Box?

These little boxes are a blank canvas! Their small size makes them ideal for trying out new techniques and color combinations without a huge commitment. Plus, they're readily available at thrift stores, garage sales, and even online marketplaces, making them a budget-friendly project. Whether you're a seasoned DIYer or just starting out, this project is perfect for you.

Prepping for Success: Using Dixie Belle Bonding Boss

Laminate surfaces can be tricky to paint. They're slick and often resist paint adhesion. That's where Dixie Belle Bonding Boss comes in! This amazing product creates a tacky surface that your paint can grip onto, ensuring a long-lasting and chip-free finish. Here's how to use it:

  1. Clean the Surface:  Start by thoroughly cleaning your jewelry box with a degreaser like Dixie Belle's White Lightning. Remove any dust, dirt, or grime. This crucial step ensures proper adhesion of the Bonding Boss.

  2. Apply Bonding Boss:  Using a brush or a roller, apply a thin, even coat of Bonding Boss to the areas you plan to paint. Don't overwork it.

  3. Dry Time is Key: Allow the Bonding Boss to dry completely. It will take 24 full hours before you paint! The drying time will depend on the humidity and temperature, so refer to the product instructions. Don't rush this step!

Now for the fun part – adding color! Dixie Belle Silk All-In-One Paint is a fantastic choice for this project. It's a self-leveling paint that provides excellent coverage and a smooth, luxurious finish. Plus, it has a built-in primer and topcoat, saving you time and effort. The color I chose for this project? Oasis! A bold bright blue!

  1. Stir, Don't Shake: Gently stir your Silk paint before using. Shaking can create air bubbles.

  2. Apply Thin Coats: Apply thin, even coats of Silk paint using a high-quality smooth brush. Avoid applying thick coats, as this can lead to drips and uneven drying.

  3. Allow to Dry: Let each coat dry completely before applying the next. This usually takes about 2-4 hours, but again, refer to the product instructions.

  4. Multiple Coats for Coverage: You'll likely need two coats for full coverage, especially if you're using a lighter color over a dark surface.

  5. Light Sanding (Optional):  If you notice any brushstrokes after the paint is completely dry, you can lightly sand with a fine-grit sandpaper (like 220 grit) for an ultra-smooth finish. This paint has a self leveling property! It will look amazing!

Adding a Transfer for a Unique Touch

Transfers are a fantastic way to add personality and visual interest to your painted jewelry box. Dixie Belle offers a wide variety of beautiful transfers to choose from. The one I am using today is called The Gilded Age!

  1. Choose Your Transfer: Select a transfer that complements your paint color and style. Pick a transfer that has the paint color in it!

  2. Prepare the Transfer: Carefully cut out the portion of the transfer you want to use. Remove the protective backing.

  3. Apply the Transfer: Position the transfer on the painted surface and gently smooth it down, starting from the center and working outwards. Use a transfer tool or a credit card to remove any air bubbles.

  4. Burnish the Transfer:  Use a transfer tool to burnish the transfer, ensuring it adheres well to the surface.

  5. Seal the Transfer (Optional): While Silk paint has a built-in topcoat, you can add an extra layer of clear sealer for added protection, especially if the jewelry box will be used frequently and to protect your transfers.

Finishing Touches

Once your paint and transfer are dry and sealed (if desired), you can add any finishing touches, such as new hardware or decorative embellishments. I reused the original hardware, keeping this project budget friendly. I added a silkscreen stencil with Moonshine Metallics to make those details shine. What do I use to apply my paint through the stencil? A Thing-a-ma-jig tool! Its silicone and helpful to push through the screen.

Tips for Success:

  • Practice Makes Perfect: Don't be afraid to experiment! If you don't like the color or the placement of the transfer, you can always repaint or remove it.

  • Protect Your Work Surface: Cover your work surface with a drop cloth to protect it from paint spills.

  • Have Fun! This is a creative project, so relax and enjoy the process.

Transforming a thrift store jewelry box is a rewarding DIY project that allows you to express your unique style. By using Dixie Belle Bonding Boss, Silk All-In-One Paint, and a beautiful transfer, you can create a stunning and personalized piece that you'll cherish for years to come. So, head to your local thrift store, grab a jewelry box, and let your creativity shine!
